When NYWA was founded, a new voice for women was created. Member organizations—including community and civic groups, trade associations, religious groups, ethnic organizations, issues-oriented groups—flocked to join. Each member organization had its own agenda, objectives, and programs. Through NYWA, these groups and their members have come together to work on basic issues of common interest, and to advocate for public policy as it impacts women and families.

NYWA has long wanted to add a financial component to the mutual support of the NYWA network. The Elly Grants, named for NYWA’s redoubtable founder Elinor Guggenheimer, were created to encourage, recognize, and offer financial support to significant projects and programs of member organizations.

Elly Grants are overseen by NYWA’s Elly Grant Action Group, which developed the criteria and guidelines for entries. Applications are distributed throughout the membership; a forum, led by a grantsmanship expert, is conducted for NYWA members to instruct them in submitting entries for consideration. An independent panel of judges reviews each submission, in camera. The panel selects awardees from several dozen entries.

Elly Grants are awarded at the Star Breakfast.
